The brief for this project, a former mill house and hidden architectural treasure in the heart of Brook Green, was to maximise the inherent benefits of an outdoor space by creating a bold and striking area for private retreat and escapism in the heart of the city.

With a background in the arts, the client wanted the design to be strong, unique and adventurous, working with the traditional architecture of the building’s façade.  Materials, both hard and soft, were chosen to pay homage to the industrial nature of the building and used in a calming fashion to reflect the softer nature of a garden environment.

We introduced bespoke, contemporary COR-TEN steel planters and fashioned them to create a “journey” for the user extending the sense of space and maximising the area available for planting which was designed to be relaxed and naturalised in nature, evoking the soothing atmosphere of a perennial meadow.  Following a structural survey for weight loading capacity and the reinstatement of a watertight membrane layer, graceful grey porcelain paving was laid onto a pedestal system for easy ongoing maintenance and access.

Clean, bold lines, elegant materials and atmospheric planting combined to create a powerful space with a calming and tranquil atmosphere perfect for private retreat.
